Yoga Or Pilates?

Yoga Or Pilates?

Ask the Avalon yoga school in New South Wales (NSW) whether you should do yoga or pilates, or, do your research to find out which form of exercise is better for you. There are similarities between the two exercise forms, but there are marked differences too. Pilates is about strengthening your body. It is pure exercise, working your body and working your muscles. It can be done one-on-one, which is generally better than a class so that your teacher can watch you carefully and prevent injury. Pilates is good, it will help you get strong and slim. Yoga is very similar but yoga concentrates on not just exercise but also breathing and mindfulness. So with yoga, you get the same strength, but also, you learn how to breathe and how to be calm and aware.

How to choose between the two?

Of course, any yoga school is going to tell you to do yoga! Yoga is a beautiful practice, one where your body and your mind are both equally important. Yoga always include poses that come from ancient times, each pose strengthens and builds muscle, but also strengthens and builds focus, concentration, mindfulness and joy. At the end of a yoga class, there is always a short meditation, and it is a marvellous way to end an exercise session.

Yoga is not for everyone. Some people prefer pilates and that is just the way it rocks! Yoga took off during the pandemic with people realising they need more than exercise, and yoga really can be life-changing. It is, for so many people. There are many different forms of yoga, and yes, there is pilates too and there is the gym too!

Try a class of yoga and try a  pilates session. Chat to an Avalon yoga school NSW and see which form of exercise you prefer.
