Should you buy the JBL Flip 4 in 2021?

JBL speakers are known for amazing sound performance and JBL Flip 4 speaker will not really disappoint you in sound quality. It’s a great sounding speaker with the high-quality bass base. This speaker is for the young millennials who enjoy music on the go. It’s not only portable but it delivers powerful stereo sound.

Yes, the speaker is that it is waterproof but doesn’t float like the UE Wonderboom. You can play it at your pool party or house party. It also features built-in echo-canceling speakerphone. So, you can receive your calls with crystal clear quality. It integrates with voice assistant to give you a great music experience.

There’s nothing quite like feeling as though you got more than what you paid for. That’s how you’ll feel if you drop a C-note on JBL’s Flip 4 Bluetooth speaker. Small, easy tote, and waterproof to the point of being submersible, this speaker sounds like it’s considerably bigger and much more expensive.

It can easily fill a large bedroom with sound, and it can also hold its own outside. But the Flip 4 is more than just loud. It delivers a quality of sound that you wouldn’t expect for its size or price tag, despite being outfitted with just two 40mm full-range drivers and an 8-watt-per-channel amplifier.

A pair of 1.5-inch passive radiators on each end certainly help by serving up copious amounts of bass response, but never out of proportion to the mid-range and higher frequencies. I found that the Flip 4 delivered terrific dynamic range with all types of music, from acoustic jazz to hard rock.

What’s inside the box?

In the box you’ll get the speaker, a bright orange charging cable, and the instruction and warranty information. Pretty standard from the company and I wasn’t expecting any kind of fancy carrying case at this price point anyway.

How’s the build and design of the JBL Flip 4?

At first glance, there isn’t much about the Flip 4 that sets it apart from the previous Flip 3, and that’s because aside from a few minor design changes like the phone button being turned into a more fitting triangle for pause or play, there really isn’t too much difference between them. The Flip 4 is still rocking the iconic cylindrical shape with exposed passive bass radiators on either end to match the rest of the JBL line-up. That said there is one key difference that makes this a worthy upgrade to the previous model — waterproofing.

The fabric that wraps around the speaker might look fairly similar to the previous model, but it’s actually completely waterproof now. It’s IPX7 waterproof to be exact, which along with being able to be submerged for 30 minutes in up to a meter of water, also means that’s sealed against dust, dirt, and sand. So taking this to the beach was no problem.

What about the connection strength?

Let’s circle back to that JBL Connect+ plus button for a second because this is one of my biggest complaints with this speaker. If you remember the Flip 3 also had a JBL Connect button, but this one is Connect+ and that extra plus sign makes a huge difference. While the old one could only connect two JBL speakers together, this new Connect+ button can connect up to 100. Pretty great, until you realize that you can’t connect to any previous speaker that doesn’t have Connect+.

So if you have another speaker and were hoping to connect the Flip 4 to it you’re out of luck. This is a real bummer because the Flip series isn’t so expensive that it’s impossible to imagine someone buying one every time a new one comes out, and now they can’t even connect them together.

Connectivity and Battery Life

The speaker is great on connectivity and there are no hiccups. It connects to two wireless smartphones or devices at a single time. The speaker also features JBL connect + that lets you connect up to 100 JBL speakers together. This will surely amplify your sound to a good extent. The battery performance of the speaker is good and that is amazing.

It gives you 12 hours of battery backup with a complete charge. There are wireless speakers that offer up to 16 hours of battery life, so this could have been better. Still, you can enjoy your music on the go with 12 hours of playback. The charge is also quick.

Pros

  • The sound clarity is good.
  • The audio is warm and balanced.
  • It’s completely waterproof.
  • It’s durable and sturdy.
  • It has a multi-speaker setup.

Cons

  • Can distort in the higher range.
  • No change in design.
  • Battery performance is decent.
  • Price is on the higher side.
  • Sound lacks proper refinement.
