Congratulations on making it through truck driving school, and obtaining your Class A CDL! Now that you are safe to operate behind the wheel, you are surely eager to apply for and land an entry level CDL job. While there are many things to be excited about, it is also important to prepare yourself for potential challenges as you face the job on your own for the first time. Here are some tips on what to expect as a recent graduate staring a Class A CDL job.

You Will Work with a Driver Trainer

Combining the role of boss and trainer, your first few months behind the wheel will be accompanied by a certified driver trainer. These professionals will help you with every aspect of operating your rig safely—from starting your day, to parking your rig safely at night. While this person is here to help you learn, there may be a bit of tension when mistakes are made. Be patient with yourself, and understand that you will not be completely confident behind the wheel the second you get out of truck driving school. It all takes time and experience!

Be Prepared for Less Desirable Routes

As a new employee, you are at the bottom of the food chain. This means the “best” routes will be snatched up by veteran drivers, leaving the less-desirable ones for the newbies. This could involve some hard-to-navigate roads and docks, difficult customers, or strange schedules you need to adhere to.

Take it Slower Than You Think

You are still new to this! No matter how confident you feel in the beginning, take every move slower than you normally would. Any accidents you have early-on will be logged on your driving record, and could even impact your ability to keep your job, if the accident is exceptionally preventable. Over time, you will learn how to combine safety and efficiency in the best possible way when operating your rig. For now, just take it slow, and get used to the routine of it all. With time and proper training, you will be a great driver in no time!
