Digital radiography has gradually been supplanting the screen and film radiography system in many human radiology departments over the last 2 decades. This technology is also gaining wide acceptance in veterinary medicine. Technical development in DR has been advancing at a rapid rate, and in almost all cases the price for these systems has been decreasing. Another factor that influences the price of DR systems is the increasing number of vendors that are interested in this.

Basically, digital radiography systems consist of a digital detector, which supplants the silver halide–based films and cassettes used in conventional radiography. The detector absorbs the energy carried by the x-rays that exit the patient. This energy is then transformed into electrical charges that are digitized and quantified into a grey-scale image proportional to the amount of energy deposited for the digitization. Based on the type of detector that is used, DR involves computed radiography (CR) or direct radiography (DR) (also known as DDR).
