One Need to Know About Cathodic Protection

Corrosion is a primary cause of metallic structures' premature failure. By installing and cathodic protection testing systems, operators can regularly expand their installations and equipment's lifetime.

These systems have been used for years to prevent corrosion in a wide range of civil and industrial applications. Typically, they are installed while building, expanding or upgrading.

What Is Cathodic Protection?

It protects industrial machinery and structures such as steel, water pipelines, storage tanks, oil pipelines, ships. Cathodic protection is a well-known and influential technology to prevent corrosion and degradation of metals. Corrosion occurs in the underground and exposed structures of the soil and the underwater equipment. Corrosion may have damaging effects on metal structures if not addressed on time.

How Does the Protection of Cathodes Work?

Two options are used to mitigate corrosion; coatings primarily but only for a specific lifetime are used. CP is an additional defence form and can be used over the lifetime of the asset. Coatings cannot be replaced or maintained for all structures necessarily or effectively. However, the CP is adaptable to the changing environment and corrosion conditions and can be adjusted through asset life.

Cathodic protection can effectively prevent and control the harmful process of corrosion. The process for CP consists of converting anodic sites on the metal surface into cathodic sites, known as an electrochemical cathodic reaction.

Direct current is used in the CP process to counteract the corrosive chemical anodic response reaction that destroys metal surfaces. However, it has to be noted that CP does not restore the damaged metal surface while preventing deterioration of the metal and corrosion.

A Better Solution to Control Corrosion

In different environments, cathodic protection can be used for different types of metal structures. It is one of the few corrosion management methods which can protect a submerged metal surface with competence. However, you must ensure that you design and acquire reliable CP current from your system to ensure an effective CP process.

This type of anti-corrosion practice is used primarily on gas pipes and oil rings. Using a more electrically active alloy near the protected structure or equipment, the alloy 'diverts' the attention from the structure of the corrosive agents. It absorbs all electrolytes until they disrupt and fully corrode.

The Bottom Line

Cathodic protection can be used in various industries and is mainly used to control corrosion of the metal. This cathodic protection is also considered the safest method, and it gives a better solution.
