They say HE works in mysterious ways – and that people who have encountered HIS ways are changed people! Most of the stories you read up in papers, periodicals, online, etc talk about a life changing event with regards to health, wealth, family, etc. But my story is different! Mine involves a life – but a life that if I am lucky, will spend 15 to 18 years with me before leaving me, will never grow as tall as me or as big as me or as old as me….
A life that will love me unconditionally, will be loyal to the T, will wait patiently for me every second of every day, will take away my pain, my sorrow, my hurt… basically a life moulded in HIS true form!
I talk about my pet, my dog, my son, my Harley!
Our story starts with an unwanted pregnant dog being given shelter in a building under construction. The stars were aligned to ensure the site-in-charge was a dog lover, the building was right next to my office and we both had a common friend who spoke of dogs as passionately as we both did. This led to visits to the puppies during lunch time every day, which led to the decision to adopt one of those puppies.
The next question was which one? All were little fuzz balls, lively and loving. But amongst the litter, there stood one puppy 2 paws taller than the rest – who because of his size climbed over the other puppies and was lovingly called “Sherpa” by the caretakers. This puppy seemed to love to chew on my shoelaces, on the cuff of my trousers and my fingertips. This ‘Sherpa’ seemed the most excited when I walked into that site, so enthusiastic, that he walked straight into my life and my heart.
My love for bikes led me to name him Harley! And boy, what a ride I have had with him. He is now 9 years old (63 in human years if you are one to count) and the adventures don’t stop. He has taken me along on a ride that turned me from a corporate dud to an entrepreneur, a creator, a provider, a mentor, an inventor but most importantly, he has shown me the path to an open heart, a giving soul, a selfless love and a gracious heart!
He taught me how to love all dogs, no matter their breed, their age, their parents’ background, where they stay, what they ate – basically – he taught me HIS way to love.
I spend whatever free time I have with him, knowing he won’t be around soon. If I have a very busy week, being an entrepreneur, I try my best to take a day off to spend with him.
Of all the things I could do in life, I would love to lie down with my son, paw-in-arm, his unique scent filling my senses, his warmth against me and the icing on the cake would be his intermittent licks on my face.
If there is one thing I will forever be indebted to HIM for, its Him (Harley)!
