
Pigment Violet 23 is an organic compound that is commonly used as a commercial pigment in the coating industry. It is a member of the dioxazine family of heterocyclic pigments. However, it is derived from carbazoles.
Going into the slightly technical end of explanations; Pigment Violet 23 is prepared by condensation of chloranil and 3 amino-N-ethylcarbazole
It has a centrosymmetric angular structure as shown below.
Commonly known as PV23 in the industry, Pigment Violet 23 has been around for more than 65 years now. It’s origin dates back to 1928, when a patent was filed for the pigment. Researchers at the Hoechst company in Germany undertook a multistage synthesis based on an ingredient of coal-tar and chloranile known as carbazole.
Initially during World War 2, the production of Diamine Light Blue, a direct dyestuff for cotton, was the sole use of the pigment.
