Buying a New Judo Gi? Keep These Tips In Mind

Judo is a fight form that is deadly and graceful at the same time. These two warring adjectives define the extremes of the fight form very aptly. It is an ancient fight form that developed in Japan but now it is quite popular in the whole world. It has been adapted by different cultures and has also been modified somewhat by the developing times, however, the essence of judo is etched in proper discipline and the effort of regular practice that sharpens and hones the skill.

Some are made from one piece, without a seam in the back for added durability. This of course means less tearing and ripping. A seamless back also improves your comfort as you won't be rolling over a big bulky lump each time you go to your back.

If you can find a gi with a rubberized collar, it allows for faster drying and reduces bacterial growth from sweat.

Many say you also want to select a super soft gi to move and roll more fluid during practice and competition - you don't want to feel like you're exercising in heavy starch and burlap. Some of the lightest uniforms on the market only weigh in at about 3 pounds, and having a very lightweight judo gi uniform can also make the fluidity of your movement, fighting, and actions easier and more comfortable during competitions or training.

It can be a tradeoff though. Generally speaking, the softer your gi, the easier it might be torn. Nowadays, however, with all of the different weaves, you can still get a soft gi without sacrificing too much in durability.

Many cotton gis can shrink, however, so keep that in mind when selecting your size. If you can look at product reviews, you should look for a gi that is not only lightweight but also soft to make training, rolling, and competing easier and more comfortable. Many retailers will also provide a sizing chart to find a gi that fits you comfortably.

Competition cuts are more fitted, so while you still have freedom of motion, it's more difficult for your opponent to grab onto and manipulate during competition. Some of these gis are made with a light cotton weave for maximum flexibility, durability, and a wide range of free motion.

Some gis is reinforced at the knees and elbows. They'll use stronger material or stress patches as well as extra stitching. This is an advantage for a gi you would wear to class or for everyday practice because it prevents the uniform from wearing out prematurely from heavy use. However, some find these to be more restrictive and stiffer in competition. Many people who practice have a separate competition uniform that they only wear to tournaments and for competitive fighting.

As far as BJJ gis or kimonos go, when you are selecting one, you will also want to pick one that appeals to you. Gis come in a variety of colors and styles, so you will want to pick one that fits your personality, or the uniformity of your school.

You can also use price to select your gi - they range from $50 to 200 dollars, and you will want to read several reviews before choosing the one that has the most features and styling's that you would want for the price.

Also, choose one depending on your climate. Lighter gis is better for summer or warmer climates. During winter months or in colder climates, you may want to choose a warmer uniform. However, you do not want to select a uniform that is so thick that it restricts your movements, becomes bulky, or traps heat and sweat against your skin as you exercise.
