Population Density by State

This database contains Population Density By County race/ethnicity and age group. Race and ethnicity are defined by the Bureau of the Census based on defintions from the Office of Management and Budget. These include:


  • American Indian and Alaska Native: Person having origins in any of the original peoples of North and South America (including Central America) and who maintains tribal affiliation or community attachment
  • Asian: Person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, or the Indian subcontinent including, for example, Cambodia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippine Islands, Thailand, and Vietnam
  • Black: Person having origins in any of the Black racial groups of Africa
  • Hispanic: Person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin regardless of race
  • Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander: Person having origins in any of the original peoples of Hawaii, Guam, Samoa, or other Pacific Islands
  • White: Person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa
  • Two or more races: Person self-identifying with two or more races.


Estimates reflect the resident population on July 1st of each year. For more information on how these estimates are generated
