Centrifuges alfa Laval can be roughly divided into two major groups:

Decanter Centrifuge. Centrifugal forces act tangentially to the cylinder wall, so separation occurs along the lateral

walls of a rotating drum, a type of centrifuge also known as a decanter. Centrifugal separators are further subdivided into single-disc and double-disc types, depending on whether one or two discs rotate at the same speed.

Since more material is thrown outwards from the wall in a decanter centrifuge than from the centre in a disc centrifuge, decanter centrifuges are generally used for coarser particles than disc centrifuges.


What is Centrifugal Force?


Centrifugal alfa Laval force is what happens when you swing something around your head on the end of a string - for example, a rock on the end of a string. Centrifugal force is what keeps the rock moving in a circle around you as you swing it around. If you want to make the rock go up higher, you have to pull harder on the string - that means if you want to separate materials at finer size/higher density/lower density, you have to spin the centrifuge harder. Centrifugal force is proportional to the radius of rotation squared (v^2) - that means if you double the radius, you quadruple the centrifugal force. Centrifugal forces are denoted by g (g = 9.8 m/s^2).


Process of Decanter Centrifuge: 


The material to be separated is loaded into a drum (vat) and immersed in a liquid. Centrifugal force pushes the denser particles towards the wall of the drum, while lighter particles are thrown towards the center.


Advantages of Decanter Centrifuge:


·        High-capacity separation.

·        Decanter centrifuges typically have the largest throughputs of all types of the centrifuge.

·        High-productivity.

·        Large capacities mean short process times, so decanter centrifuges are also used in high-throughput applications such as washing bottles in the bottling industry.

·        Strong separations.

·        With their large capacities, decanter centrifuges can separate products with relatively large differences in density.


Disadvantages of Decanter Centrifuge:


·        Accumulation of contaminants on the wall.

·        Due to their concentrated loadings, decanter centrifuges are more susceptible to fouling than other types of the centrifuge.

·        Overflow. If the overflow rate is too high or if the flow pattern is unstable, particles accumulate in the upper part of the drum and eventually clog it.
