Nature's Way of Saying "I Love You"

Did you know that when a girl is born, she already has a favorite flower? No, I'm not serious about that. However, even at a young age, girls and boys understand the significance of sending flowers to those they care about. In my first week of school, I remember little Johnny handing me a Dandelion he had picked from the recess yard. He knew flowers were the way to this girl's heart even when he was only five years old!

The practice of giving flowers as gifts dated back to the Middle Ages and became extremely popular in the mid-1700s. In Victorian culture, showing emotions was frowned upon, but giving flowers was an acceptable form of communication. As with most things we know about the Victorian era, the people took great pride in the detail and provided meaning to every aspect of each bloom they came into contact with. Size, color, condition, and even position about another flower all have purposes that do not require the use of a single word. Even how a bouquet was presented or hand-delivered conveyed a different message to the intended recipient.

We still use a few of these meanings today when we send flowers online to our loved ones. Red roses represent romance, while daffodils represent new beginnings! However, I believe someone should inform Johnny that dandelions are weeds!
