What Is A Dental Emergency?

While preventative dental care is a good way to preserve your oral health, many people still suffer form a variety of dental emergencies. Tooth decay, gum disease and chipped teeth are among the most common problems that require emergency treatment.

Unfortunately, many people today do not realise that minor dental problems have the potential to become much more serious if left untreated.  Some dental problems are considered minor, where others require medical assistance as soon as possible. This makes identifying a dental emergency all the more important. Here is what you need to know about dental emergencies.

What Problems Are Considered Emergencies?

A dental emergency is an urgent situation that involves one or more of your teeth. It may include the need for replacement of a lost filling, extraction of a tooth, or treatment of misaligned or dislodged teeth. Some dental emergencies can involve severe pain in the mouth.

Additionally, pain plays a major role in determining if your condition requires urgent care.  If you experience severe, constant pain in your mouth or from one of your teeth, it is best to visit a dentist as soon as possible. This is especially the case if you are unable to pinpoint the cause of the pain yourself.

Tooth Ache

If you are experiencing a toothache, it is usually because of bacteria build-up or mild tooth decay. In most cases, this can be resolved by visiting your dentist for an examination and cleaning.  However, if the symptoms persist, involve swelling or the pain occurs suddenly, it may be a result of an underlying issue such as tooth decay or an abscess. If you experience these symptoms, visit your dentist right away for emergency treatment.

Chipped and Broken Teeth

When a tooth is chipped or broken, it can be filed down and restored with a dental bonding resin. However, if the tooth is severely damaged, such as by having sharp edges after breaking, it will need to be monitored by your dentist for signs of infection. If the tooth develops an infection, extraction may be necessary.

Lost Filling Or Crown

Crowns and fillings restore previously damaged teeth back to optimal appearance and function. If you have lost a filling or your dental crown has fallen off, it is important to see your dentist as soon as possible. If the loss of the tooth involves an exposed nerve, it may need to be treated with a root canal procedure or extraction.

Abscess

An abscess is a collection of pus that forms because of an infection caused by tooth decay or gum disease. In addition to being painful, when left untreated, these can spread to surrounding teeth and gum tissue requiring emergency dental treatment such as extraction or antibiotics.
