CHOOSE A RIGHT FABRIC TO WORKWEAR APPREAL MATERIAL

CHOOSE THE FABRIC BEST SUITED TO YOUR WORKWEAR

The best fabrics for office uniforms are cotton, polyester, and nylon. Other clothing pieces use some variation of these like the cotton twill, and also mix and match different fabrics in the case of polyester blends.

When shopping for workwear , it is important to pay close attention to the type of fabric the garment is made from. Each fabric offers unique characteristics, with some being more comfortable, technically superior, and more durable than others. Before purchasing your safety gear and uniform workwear across Malaysia & Singapore, you will need to consider your profession to ensure that the fabric will be able to withstand the rigours of your daily routine.

TYPES OF FABRIC USED IN WORKWEAR

Uniform workwear can be made from either a single material, or more commonly a blend which can provide additional benefits. The most common fabrics used include:

Polyamide Fibres – this is a synthetic material, with the most common being nylon. Benefits of nylon include excellent strength and high durability, meaning the garment will last longer than those made of natural fibres. However you should know that polyamide fibres will retain moisture and dry at a slower rate than alternative fabrics, which is why many work shirts will be made of a mix of polyamide fibres and other fabric.

Polyester – you may notice this material being used for sportswear, and it’s also used for workwear. It is a popular choice thanks to its moisture wicking ability, making it a great choice for busy tradies and those who work outdoors in the summer. It is very light weight and highly durable, but it can have a slightly rough finish. Therefore it is often blended with cotton to provide a good balance between comfort, durability and high-performance whilst on the job.

Natural Fibres – the most commonly used natural fibres are cotton and wool, favoured for their breathability and comfort. They lack durability, hence they are usually blended with synthetic fibres to improve longevity.

High Performance Fibres – technology has advanced at a rapid rate, and high performance fibres can now be seen on the market. Some of these fibres claim to offer exceptional puncture and resistance, anti-bacterial properties, heat resistance and chemical resistance to name a few benefits. You may notice some workwear using high performance fibres such as carbon fibre, aluminium, ceramic fibres and stainless steel.

Typical workwear fabric weights that meet standards (AS2001.2.13) are:

  • Lightweight – 155gsm (e.g polyester and cotton blend polo shirts, lightweight cotton shirts etc)
  • Midweight – 190gsm (e.g. cargo pants, fleeces etc)
  • Heavyweight – 310gsm (e.g. thick fleece tops)
