All Information About Ruby Gemstone Or Manik Gemstone

Ruby gemstone made of transparent red corundum (q.v.), which is a mineral form Al2O3. Its colour ranges from deep cochineal red to pale rose, with some cases a hint of purple. The most valuable is a Pigeon-blood Red. It is made red by replacing a few aluminum atoms with chromium. This happens 1 in 5,000. Ruby has high refractivity. It is brilliant when polished and cut. However, due to its weak dispersion it lacks fire. Ruby turns green when exposed to high temperatures, but it returns to its original colour after cooling. Ruby glows bright red when exposed to radiant discharge.

Ruby is a rare mineral. It is found in northeastern Mandalay in north-central Myanmar, northeast of Mandalay. There it can be found in bands of crystalline limestone that are associated with granitic or gneissic rock. There have been rubies found in Thailand in gravels with spinels and sapphires. They are usually dark in colour and often tend to be a deep reddish-brown. The gem gravels of Sri Lanka do not have the same colour as those found in Myanmar.

BRITANNICA QUIZ

(Bed) Stones and (Flint), Stones

While diamonds are a girl's best friend and closest relative, what is the closest mineral to a diamond? This quiz will test your knowledge about rocks and minerals.

To distinguish the stone from other red gems, it is sometimes called oriental Ruby. So, Arizona rubies, Cape rubies and Australian rubies are all fine garnets. Balas ruby refers to ruby spinel. It is unlikely that ruby was ever known by the ancient Hebrews, even though the word ruby appears in the Old Testament.

Artificial production of rubies has been a success. It was once common to combine small pieces of natural stone. This led to flame-fusion (Verneuil), which is the process of creating artificial ruby using purified ammonia and small amounts chrome alum. Synthetic ruby with 2.5 percent chromic dioxide is prized for its pigeon blood red colour. Although synthetic rubies have the same physical characteristics as natural corundum, they can be distinguished by microscopic bubbles or striae.
