Three Best SPS Corals for Beginners

So you have your equipment primed and tanks in a stable condition. All you need to do now is select the best SPS corals of your choice.

SPS corals come in a range of colours and shapes. This can vary from branch to flat and everything in between. Remember, every coral is unique, and each has its specific requirements.

For instance, Green Bali Slimer are green; however, the shade tends to vary depending on your lighting. One can find every variation from dark green to neon. This SPS coral is known to sport wide branches, common in the Acropora genus.

Since slimers grow fast once established, make sure that you provide plenty of room in your growing tank. As the name suggests, they are also known to yield a slime-like substance when disturbed. Therefore, make sure that you handle the corals in a minimum way.

Let us have a look at some more types of SPS corals in Canada

Chalice Coral (Echinophyllia spp.)

These are probably the easiest SPS coral to manage from the Lobophyllidae family. Exceptionally hardy, they tend to encrust on any sturdy surface.

Available in a variety of colours, the oral discs comprise a different colour than the remainder of the body. They are known to be a different colour than the remainder of the body.

Chalice corals have an aggressive nature. With sweeper tentacles up to 30cm in length, they attack any coral that comes within reach. Therefore, place them carefully when adding them to your tank. In an overall sense, they do well with high-quality water.

Velvet Coral (Montipora spp.)

Montiporas top the list when it comes to “easy” SPS corals. With over 200 species, one can easily get spoiled for choice in both colour and shape. Due to the small appearance of the polyps, these corals appear “fuzzy,” which is why they have got the name Velvet corals.

Montiporas are known to be submissive, unlike some SPS corals. Considering a careful placement is necessary; however, this time, it is to keep your Montiporas safe from potential chemical warfare with other residents of the tank. Or else, you can just keep up with your calcium levels to keep them happy.

Leaf Coral (Pavona decussata)

Leaf corals are known to develop a ruffled appearance with flat, upright fronds. Leaf corals are hardy in nature and tend to develop corallites that make them particularly resistant to disease. Due to this resistance, they are a popular choice among beginners.
