The Future of Windshield Technology

We live in a society of continuous development, and the windshield has not been left behind. Vehicle manufacturers have decided to advance windscreens to more than their primary functions of providing structural integrity and protection. The modern windscreen is set to provide next-level protection and enhance the driver's experience.

Some of the windscreen advancements include:

  • Stronger glass

The traditional windscreen is made of two pieces of glass sealed together and has an outer plastic layer. Even though the glass has provided protection and served its purpose for a long, professionals believe a stronger glass will work magic. The formulation of this stronger glass is still information at the moment. The glass will provide maximum strength and minimal weight. The companies developing it estimate to achieve a glass of three millimetres thickness.

  • Smart windscreen display

Windshield manufacturers plan to advance the already used projected windscreen display a step further. The smart windscreen display will provide the driver with speed, navigation, road hazards, and weather information. It is still debatable whether the technology will be beneficial or a road hazard. The industry hopes to reduce accidents by helping the driver keep their eyes on the road rather than their phone or dash.

  • Auto-dimming glass

This feature will allow drivers to dim specific windscreen areas to prevent blinding glare while driving. The technology is already incorporated in some vehicles. The feature dims the glass region that is likely to cause eye strain and reduce brightness and incoming light.

  • Augmented reality windscreen

Augmented Reality ADAS would project virtual objects and graphics onto your windscreen to overlay them onto the real world. Tech firms are working on a projection fitting in any car. With the feature, crucial information will be brought directly onto the windscreen. The windscreen will highlight street and road names, speed limits, traffic congestion warnings, local amenities, and other things.

  • Wiperless windscreens

Some high-level car companies have been working towards eliminating windscreen wipers. The technology is borrowed from fighter jets that use ultrasonic sound to repel rain. An ultrasonic field, produced by a transducer mounted in the windscreen corner, creates a force field of sorts and a barrier for rain, moisture and debris. It is currently at the research and development phase.
