Wantage is an attractive market square in the graphic Vale of White Horse. It is honored as the native land of king Alfred the Great. A statue of King Alfred, looking splendidly, stands in the middle of the marketplace. King Alfred was born here in 849 AD, while Wantage changed into a crucial Saxon town. As for the sculpture, it was authorized by Lord Wantage, and constructed in 1877 by Count Gleichen third and last son of Queen Victoria.
