Things You Must Know While Performing Welding

What is the welding process?

Welding process is a fabrication process whereby two or more parts are fused together by means of heat, pressure or both forming a join as the parts cool.

Welding is usually used on metals and thermoplastics but can also be used on wood.

There are 4 welding processes :

1. MIG – Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW)

2. TIG – Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW)

3. Stick – Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)

4. Flux-cored – Flux-cored Arc Welding (FCAW)

Proper coaching is needed in welding so that you can avoid harming yourself when in practice. With the right mindset, energy, welding tools and procedures, welding can turn out to be an easier practice than most people think.

Below are some tips that you must practice to be successful welders in the future.

Things You Must Know While Performing Welding

1. Safety should be the first and foremost thing

It is risky to perform the job of welding, if you’re not taking proper safety measures. You need to be extremely conscious about all the measures that you’re taking.

To begin with, you must acquire the right gear such as a certified welding helmet, fire resistant jacket, welding gloves, the ideal welder, safety glasses, and welding pliers.

Furthermore, avoid welding close to flammable materials. Select a room that has sufficient space where the sparks can fly freely.

2. Keep the surrounding clean

It is extremely imperative to keep the surroundings clean so as to avoid any accident during the welding process. So, a clean welding surface will eliminate any errors that are likely to be made when welding.

The surface to be welded should be cleaned as well. This is important because things like dirt, grease, oil and other debris can enter the weld pool leading to contamination which may result in poor welding quality.

3. Must ensure proper ventilation of the space

Ventilated area is a must for performing welding. If you will avoid it, you will have to face drastic results in the future.

In general, when welding is being done on metals not considered hazardous, a ventilation system that will move a minimum of 2000 cubic feet per minute (CFM) of air per welder is apt.

Though, various materials are considered extremely hazardous and should be welded only in perfectly ventilated areas to avoid the accumulation of toxic materials or to eradicate possible oxygen deficiency not only to the operator but to others in the immediate vicinity.

4. Must ensure fire prevention measures

Welding is prone to fire and thus, the area needs to have adequate fire prevention measures. This is one of the prominent things to take care of in order to avoid any major accident.

In certain welding situations it may be necessary to ask someone to watch for fires that could go undetected until the welder has finished the job.

Suitable fire extinguishing equipment such as buckets of sand or a dry chemical extinguisher should be readily available.

Summary

You need to ensure that all the above mentioned parameters are ticket prior to starting your welding process so as to make sure that there will be no accident or error.
