Plumbing is a lot more than just fixing a leak under the sink. It is truly a huge system that needs to be maintained. It has so many techniques and equipment that require research and hard work. Do you have what it takes? Regardless of your answer, here are some tips to help you.

Use the sounds you hear from your pipes to help you to determine what the problem is. Certain sounds mean the water pressure is too high. Other sounds can signify loose pipes or slight clogs from calcium or iron buildup. Listening to your pipes can save you a lot of money hunting down the problem.

On very cold winter nights, allow your faucets to trickle slightly, especially if your pipes are located in a crawlspace. The running water prevents the pipes from freezing as quickly as they would otherwise. You can catch the water and use it for other household needs to prevent wasting it.

Look closely at your toilets several times throughout the year. Check to see if there are any leaks that you may not have noticed; you can do this by placing five or six drops of food coloring in the tank. If there is a leak, the color will seep into the bowl within half an hour. This process will help you catch a small problem before it gets too out of control.

Find a better way to discard cooking oil instead of pouring it down the drain where it can easily clog your pipes. Keep a coffee can or another metal container handy to pour grease into after cooking. Place the can in the freezer to harden the grease and when it's full, discard it with the trash.

Make sure overflow holes are cleaned out. This can help to prevent any water damage. Overflow holes are a way to stop water from overflowing if a sink is left on by accident. If the overflow hole is clogged it will not be able to do its job.

Cleaning your in-sink garbage disposal can extend its lifetime significantly. Create a routine that uses both normal soaps and natural materials like cherry pits of lemon rinds. With this, you'll be able to keep your garbage disposal running and smelling like new.

There are many ways to unclog a drain. You can try plunging it at first. If that doesn't work try using a chemical agent from the store. Before you go and spend money at the store though if you have baking soda and some vinegar handy, you can mix those together and pour them in the drain and try to plunge that if all else fails they have stronger remedies at your local hardware store.

Now you see that plumbing is a lot more than haphazardly fixing a tiny leak. It takes skill and work. You don't want to create more problems, so why not take some time to learn how to do it right? The above tips should have given you some pointers on how to do that.
