What is Dyeing?

Did you know that tie-dying has been around for centuries? Though many think it was invented by American hippies during the 1960s, traditional methods of tie-dye can be found in Japan, Africa, Latin America, and India– and some date back thousands of years! When you’re trying to decide how you want to color your tie dye shirts this summer, consider trying out some of these traditional tie dying methods.

Tie-dye has come back in full-force in the past year or so, and I’m here for it. I’ve personally purchased a few tie-dye sweatshirts, and they never fail to brighten my day (or remind me of summer camp crafting) when I put them on. What’s interesting, though, is this current resurgence of tie-dye isn’t like the one you might remember from the ’90s. Tie-dye was mainly all about clothes back then, but this time around, the home decor world is getting in on the multi-colored fun.

When it comes to dressing in and adding a touch of color to your wardrobe, recreating early wardrobe styles in African or Asian tradition, or just following the flower power style of fashion, you can never go wrong with tie-dyes. While factories have developed the style of simply printing out tie-dyed shirts that look exactly the same, tie-dye is actually a technique that stems back thousands of years in history in various civilizations.
