The importance of tinted windows in cars

It has already become a custom that most people protect themselves from the sun's rays when they go out to exercise, go to the beach or are simply outdoors, however; this custom is not very common when we are on board our car.

It is scientifically proven that a good part of the radiation that we endure throughout the day is produced inside the vehicle and the exposure to UV rays that we receive through the windows of a car is especially high.

For years, dermatologists have noted that patients often have more sun damage (which can lead to wrinkles, sagging, "age" spots, and even skin cancers) on the left arm, with that side of the face suffering than the other side -in countries where you drive on the right side it is the other way around-. Why? Research increasingly points to ultraviolet A (UVA) radiation penetrating through car windows.

In this situation, most cars offer protection against this threat, with few models with side and rear windows that block UV rays, so the risk is latent, especially since the sun's rays shine more through glass and because UV exposure is cumulative.

polarized lenses

By far, the best solution to protect ourselves from solar radiation is to apply a UV protective film on the car windows. It is important to take into account the level of darkness of this method, also known as polarized, since its use is regulated in many states, however, the transparent film does not have any restrictions.

According to one study, tinted lenses offer a 93 percent reduction in skin cell death from UV exposure. In fact, some car films can block 99.9 percent of radiation.

In addition to being a health issue, tinted windows also improve driving safety, as it reduces glare, eye fatigue and heat inside the vehicle.

Regarding heat in the cabin, the polarized in a certain way helps to reduce gasoline consumption, since there is no high temperature, it allows better use of air conditioning. It must be remembered that the operation of the air conditioning supposes an increase in the consumption of gasoline of 4 percent.

Use of sunscreen

In addition to the use of tinted windows, it is recommended to apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) above 15 on the face, arms, neck and hands, half an hour before driving.

Another good solution to protect ourselves against solar radiation is to wear protective clothing, such as long-sleeved shirts, long pants, sunglasses that block UV rays and a hat, especially for men who have baldness.
