e-prescribing, is a technology framework that allows doctors and other medical professionals to write and submit prescriptions online.

The use of computerised technologies to prescribe pharmaceuticals is known as e-Prescribing or electronic prescribing. Both software and hardware, such as personal computers, touch screens, and mobile and wireless devices, can be used as e-Prescribing tools. Prescribers, patients, and pharmacists all benefit from electronic prescribing, which improves patient medication adherence. It contains features such as dose verification and duplicate therapy notifications. Standard drug dictionaries are used by most e-prescribing software, such as Rcopia by DrFirst. By maintaining complete information about each prescription, e-prescribing saves time for both patients and doctors.

In Other words, An E-Prescribing system functions as an electronic reference guide at its most basic level. E-prescribing systems that are more advanced operate as standalone prescription writers. They can write and refill prescriptions for individual patients, manage drugs and access patient information, link to a pharmacy or other drug dispensing site, and interface with an EMR system.

The US government’s Electronic Prescribing Incentive Program, which reimburses a medical practise up to 2% of its Medicare Part B charges, requires the use of an approved e-prescribing system. Among other things, a competent e-prescribing system must be able to electronically send prescriptions, alert prescribers about probable adverse responses, and inform physicians about generic alternatives. Prescription errors caused by poor handwriting or unreadable faxes are also reduced with e-prescribing.

The capacity to access and interact with health data via mobile devices to better access and protect medical records, as well as increased usage of the Application Program Interface (API) to facilitate interoperability, are the primary driving reasons for e-prescribing market growth. With the increased implementation of healthcare IT in the medical profession, demand for e-prescriptions is expanding. According to Surescripts, a healthcare information network, the number of e-prescribers in the United States increased by 8% in 2017 compared to 2016, while the number of prescribers for restricted substances climbed by 59%.

e-Prescribing Market Restraints

Despite several benefits offered by e-prescribing for healthcare professionals and patients, not all providers are implementing these system due to factors such as high cost of healthcare IT and requirement of skilled professionals. e-Prescribing systems require basic technological infrastructure and training for installation and maintenance, which also increases the financial burden of their implementation. Moreover, the risk of data breach is also restraining the e-Prescribing market growth.
