Class 11th and 12th act as the turning points in a student’s life. Whichever stream the student opts for after class 10th, plays a vital role in indicating the kind of career, the student would be able to pursue in the future. A student decides which stream to take up, on the basis of their area of interest and aptitude, they mostly take up the subjects that they can keenly grasp and the ones that would prove beneficial in the career stream they want to get into.


The Science stream has been the most preferred stream among students, given the vast number of career options that it provides. But these days even the commerce stream has become highly in-demand, as a number of courses and study options are being introduced under the commerce stream. We will be elaborating on various full-time and part-time courses that are available under the commerce stream (Bachelors, Masters and PhD).


Here are ten types of bachelor’s courses that can be taken up under the commerce stream:

·        Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com)

·        Bachelor of Economics (BE)

·        Bachelor of Accounting and Finance (BAF)

·        Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA)

·        Bachelor of Computer Application (BCA)

·        Bachelor of Commerce & Bachelor of Legislative Law (B.Com LLB)

·        Chartered Accountancy (CA)

·        Company Secretary (CS)

·        Cost and Management Accountant

·        Journalism and Mass Communication

 

1.     Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) – B. Com is a 3 year UG program, mainly focusing on subjects like commerce, Economics, Business Law, Accountancy, Taxation, and finance to impart managerial skills to students. B.Com students learn about general business principles and applications.

2.     Bachelor of Economics (BE) – BE is a 3-year undergraduate course that covers the areas of production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services. Aspirants who wish to venture into the Banking and Finance sector and other major corporate industries can go for a Bachelor of Economics. 

3.     Bachelor of Accounting and Finance (BAF) - BAF offers detailed knowledge in accounting and financial subjects for students to acquire the practical skills connected with many of the processes of financial analysis and accounting principles. It is a 3-year undergraduate program and students with an interest to have a career in auditing or investment banking can benefit a lot from this course.


4.     Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) - BBA is one of the most popular choices after 12th commerce. It is a 3 year UG program that is helpful in gaining knowledge about business principles and business administration. It helps in the enhancement of the leadership abilities of the candidates and develops a business vision. Some of the major specializations under BBA are finance, marketing, HR, etc.

5.     Bachelor of Computer Application (BCA) - BCA is a 3-year undergraduate course mostly undertaken by students who wish to explore the domain of Computer languages like C, C++, Java, ASP, PHP, etc. A BCA degree holds a lot of relevance, the same way as a B. Tech degree.

6.     Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Legislative Law (B.Com LLB) - This course is a great choice for candidates who have an interest in business as well as legal studies. It is a 5 year long UG program, but it provides you with two degrees at the same time i.e. Bachelor of commerce and bachelor of legislative law, together. Under this program, the candidates learn about accounting and finance as well as various types of laws like Constitutional law, consumer protection law and the law of crimes, etc. 


7.     Chartered Accountancy (CA) - CA or Chartered Accountancy is a prestigious course or an international accounting designation that holds importance across the globe. Under this course, the candidate learns subjects such as tax laws, auditing, corporate law, business laws, taxation, etc.

8.     Company Secretary (CS) - The CS program comes under the administration of The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI). The course requires the candidates to study theory courses in law and also informs them about legal proposals and agreements of companies.

9.     Cost and Management Accountant- This is a professional course formulated by ICAI (Institute of Cost Accountants of India) and is quite similar to CA and CS. Subjects like Business Mathematics and Statics, Laws and ethics, Accounting, Economics, Management, company accounts, audit, etc. are taught to the students, under this program.


10. Journalism and Mass Communication- This course is totally different from the courses mentioned above, and it doesn’t require a student to study commerce specifically in order to take up this program, but a lot of commerce students opt for this course, who wish to make a career in media and related fields of content creation. This is a 3year UG program that helps one develop skills and explore career options in media, public relations, event management, etc.


Commerce and management is a very competitive and anticipated field, with the increasing globalization and economic developments, the need for skilled managers and accountants is growing manifold. There is a plethora of opportunities and prospects that commerce and management studies provide at the UG level so that the students can have a solid foundation and pursue their higher studies accordingly. After pursuing one of the above-mentioned courses on an undergraduate level, aspiring candidates can go for a postgraduate or even a PhD course. These days a number of aspirants are going for PhD in Commerce and Management after completing their masters in Management studies, as this course opens a large number of lucrative career options, leading to a bright future.
