Ultrasound Scan

Ultrasound Scan

ultrasound scans, commonly known as sonography, are the second most common imaging diagnostic test. It captures detailed images of human parts and structures such as tissues, blood arteries, and organs using high-frequency sound waves.

The following are some of the most commonly recommended ultrasound tests:

  • Abdominal ultrasound
  • Breast Ultrasound
  • General ultrasound
  • Musculoskeletal ultrasound
  • Prostate ultrasound
  • Thyroid ultrasound

Ultrasound is a non-invasive diagnostic technique that uses sonar principles to identify planes, ships, and submarines, the same technology that navies use to detect planes, ships, and submarines.

Benefits

  • Most ultrasound scanning is noninvasive (no needles or injections).
  • Occasionally, an ultrasound exam may be temporarily uncomfortable, but it should not be painful.
  • Ultrasound is widely available, easy to use, and less expensive than most other imaging methods.
  • Ultrasound imaging is extremely safe and does not use radiation.
  • Ultrasound scanning gives a clear picture of soft tissues that do not show up well on x-ray images.
  • Ultrasound is the preferred imaging modality for the diagnosis and monitoring of pregnant women and their unborn babies.
  • Ultrasound provides real-time imaging. This makes it a good tool for guiding minimally invasive procedures such as needle biopsies and fluid aspiration.

Ultrasound, like sonar, transfers sound waves to the target location of the body, such as gallstones. The sound waves will move cleanly through the gallbladder if there are no stones, indicating a healthy organ.

The procedure is divided into four steps:

  • The radiologist will apply a small amount of water-soluble medical gel onto the target area which makes it easier for the scanner to move smoothly on the skin and capture clearer images
  • In the second step, the radiologist will use a handheld scanner on the gel-applied skin to begin scanning. You might feel slight pressure but it is not painful
  • During the test, you have to remain still and the radiologist might ask you to hold your breath for a few seconds
  • Once the test is completed, the radiologist wipes the gel off with a soft wipe

The ultrasonic scan is used to diagnose a variety of diseases affecting the heart, liver, kidneys, and abdomen, as well as to aid with biopsies and surgeries.
