How and When to Sanitize Your Laundry

Sanitizing the laundry? Both words in the same sentence are baffling to many of us. Doesn’t washing clothes achieve the same result, so why do we need sanitizing?

When someone in our home gets sick, the first thing to do after they get well is disinfecting the living space. Cleaning off the doorknobs, floors and washing the bedsheets and blankets. All of this is done to ensure the bacteria and germs are no longer contaminating your home. But does a regular wash cycle get rid of these microscopic germs? Is washing equivalent to sanitization?

Why and What Needs Sanitization?

Washing the contaminated laundry load with other clothes can spread bacteria in those garments too. And not just clothes but pillowcases, sofa covers, and throw blankets should be sanitized too, especially when it comes to this pandemic. The rule of thumb is whatever you sweat on, needs sanitization. This generally includes your towels and gym wear but the room where you entertain, sees a lot of guests and can also harbor bacteria.

Do you really need laundry sanitization? The short answer to this question is no. Your washing machines and liquid detergent are enough to clean your clothes even when they are washed in cold water. Add on the drying cycle and spread them out in the sun, nature gets rid of any harmful particulates.

But the long answer is yes you do require sanitization when someone at home is sick or has a weak immune system and catches on to illness very fast. Another important reason is the health crisis we are living in, the cleaner you keep yourself, your home, and your clothes, the better it is for your health. Laundry sanitization additionally provides peace of mind in these trying times.

How to Sanitize Properly

Laundry Disinfectant

Now you do not require some fancy equipment for sanitization, a laundry disinfectant is enough. The regular cleaning agent does not have the same properties and is not as strong as a laundry disinfectant does which is why it cannot deal with viruses and bacteria. There are four kinds of disinfectants that do what they promise and do not damage the fabric.

Pine oil disinfectants, phenolic disinfectants, liquid chlorine disinfectants, and quaternary disinfectants are all laundry sanitizers. The latter is not readily available but is the most effective out of the four. All of these are effective in both hot and cold water and should be added just like a regular detergent during the washing cycle. This laundry sanitizer price is pocket-friendly, they are easy to get, and the most common way of disinfecting.

Sanitization cycle

The next method for disinfecting is the laundry sanitizer cycle on the washing machine. The downside is that only expensive, high-efficiency machines have a special wash cycle dedicated to sanitization. This cycle uses extremely hot water to kill off 99.9% of the viruses and bacteria. Now, these temperatures are easy on your clothes, therefore, this method is only meant for garments that can handle extra-hot temperatures. If you include delicate fabrics in this harsher sanitization cycle, your garments will be ruined by the hot water by shrinking, bleeding, or fading.

To combat this temperature hurdle, one can use normal hot water and add laundry disinfectant liquid to create the right environment and get rid of any germs.

Steam sanitization

For delicate fabrics, another option on High-Tech washing machines is dryer sanitation. This is a steam sanitary option as when the clothes are spinning in the dryer, steam is used to kill off bacteria.

Steam sanitization can also be achieved through steam ironing or clothing steamer and is recommended for all kinds of fabric. Steaming not only gets rid of stubborn wrinkles and lingering odors but also ensures total decontamination of your laundry. It creates high temperatures where microbiological bacteria cannot survive and does so without damaging the clothes. This is especially a great option for bulky duvets and blankets that are a hassle to wash and dry.

More often than not, only the liquid disinfectant method is achievable for the common person, so does that mean you need to save up to buy an expensive high-tech washing machine, dryer, steamer, or steam press? Definitely not, you only need to search for ‘laundry sanitization near me’ and enjoy the benefits of sanitized clothes at a fraction of the price of the machines.
