Whether you’re a sarasota lawn care service professional or just keeping up with your yard, lawn mowing and trimming is one of the most important aspects of landscape maintenance. A well-tended lawn keeps the grass healthy, decreases weeds, and produces a beautiful green space for you and your family to enjoy. Lawn mowing can seem intimidating at first, but with these few simple tips, you’ll be an expert in no time.

Know the type of lawnmower you need

The first thing you need to consider before buying a lawnmower is the size of your yard. A small city lot doesn't need a riding mower. Likewise, a large property would be complicated to take care of with just a push mower. Here's how much lawn you can cover with each variety:

●      Push mowers work best for lots up to about 1/4 acre.

●      Self-propelled mowers are good for lots up to about 1/2 acre in size.

●      Riding or tractor mowers are the way to go for lots between 1-2 acres. For larger areas, look into zero-turn mowers, which are more maneuverable than tractors.

Keep your blades sharp.

Sharpening your mower blades is one of the most crucial steps in maintaining a healthy lawn. Dull blades can cause unnecessary wear and tear on your lawn, which will result in brown patches. Sharp blades allow you to cut the grass without tearing it apart, which will give your lawn a neat appearance. You should sharpen your mower blades at least every six weeks or so and after each use to ensure they stay sharp.

Pick the right time and day to mow your lawn.

For example, if your lawn is shaded in the morning, wait until the afternoon when it’s in direct sunlight to mow. The same goes for watering. If your lawn needs watering first, make sure you don’t water while it’s being cut.

Secondly, try to mow when the grass is wetter. This will allow you to get a closer cut without damaging the blades of grass as much. And finally, try not to mow your yard when it’s windy. Wind can cause any clippings that fall on the ground either to fly back up into the air or be blown away from where they are supposed to be deposited.

Mow when the grass is dry

This is a rare thing in much of the country for much of the summer. But when possible, it does make the job go faster. Wet grass tends to clump underneath the mower deck, gum up the blades, and discharge the chute. Dry grass usually disintegrates quickly, so you can mow faster without stopping to clear out clippings.

Use a blade stop to keep your yard looking great.

When you’re finished mowing your lawn, stop the blade before you shut off the mower. This is a great way to keep your yard looking neat. You can also use a blade stop to clean up small areas that you missed while doing your first pass over the yard. To do this, simply go back over any missed patches of grass and then stop the blade when you’re done. This will prevent you from accidentally cutting the same blades of grass twice and making the problem worse.
