A pencil is essential if you want to draw anything, isn't it? I know, there are many.
If you need detailed information about pencils, here is a great article about pencils with fun historical facts.
Here is a graph of pencil marks judging by their hardness/softness and lightness/darkness.
When I draw faces or sketch something else, I just use an HB pencil or a mechanical pencil in my disguise.
You don't need to think much about this. If you want more information and different types of pencils, do your research and experiment.
However, if you don't care about the finer details (like me), just draw with what feels good and is easy to erase (if that's important to you).

2. Brush
If you want to paint, brushes are indispensable art tools as well.
Let me introduce you to some basic brushes you might need for your art magazine pictures.
For painting with acrylic paint, I usually use flat brushes of various sizes.
However, with watercolors, I mostly also use round brushes in different sizes.
You can also use a flat brush with watercolor. Especially if you want to cover large areas on your page. But I just like the big round brushes for watercolors. They hold enough water and paint for several strokes.
See the image below for easy reference when it comes to watercolor brushes.

One brush that I find extremely useful and practical is the Water Brush. This is a wonderful art tool because it has its own water container. So, whenever you need more water, just squeeze the brush and that's it. They come in a variety of sizes, mostly in sets of S, M and L sizes.
3. Paint
It goes without saying, doesn't it?
You can paint with acrylic paint, watercolor, oil paint, gouache, etc.
I mostly use acrylic paints and watercolors. They are completely different but both have positive sides which compel you to use them again and again.

If you're just starting out, you don't need to spend a lot of money on professional paint. Buy student grade paint now, practice and develop your skills, and then invest in something more expensive and of better quality. That way, you'll feel more confident when you start using more artist-grade paints.
And what's more, when starting out with cheap art tools and materials, you don't feel the pressure of making everything perfect and lose the fear of wasting expensive supplies.
4. Knotted Eraser
This eraser is a great art tool for anyone wanting to get into drawing.
Pencil and kneaded eraser on the table
A kneaded eraser is like a very strong glue that you can shape it any way you want, erasing even the smallest detail.
One of the best benefits of this eraser is that it doesn't leave any erased pieces. How wonderful is this?
When I sketch a face, for example, and I don't want the pencil to be visible under the watercolor, I just use this eraser, build it into a roller and lighten the pencil marks. For I roll it on my drawing.
5. Painting/drawing paper pad (or an art magazine)
You can use both. You can buy paper pads or large sheets of watercolor paper and you cut them to the size you want. Making an art magazine with these paper pads is another idea, keeping them all in one place.
