How to Use Backing Pads and Mandrels

There are two basic ways to attach backing pads to power tools: through the shaft or by using the mandrel. Backing pads are usually made of rubber and attached to the working face with Velcro material. They can be used for a variety of tasks and can be used to cover discs, mops, and a wide variety of other items. Here are some of the most common types of backing pads available

Sizes of Backing Pads

There are two basic types of backing pads: ones with a shaft built into them and those with spindles. The former is used with hand drills, while the latter is designed for angle grinders. The latter fits onto the spindle directly, locking the disc and pad securely in place. Both are usually made from aluminum and are suitable for heavy-duty sanding. You should always measure the tool before purchasing the backing pad

When selecting a mandrel, it is important to know the diameter of the backing plate. Small diameters are useful for work in tiny spaces, but they also expose rotating components, such as the counterweight. As a result, operators must be careful to keep their hands out of harm's way, and they must be aware of close-lying objects. Typically, backing pads and mandrels are available with either 1/8 " or 1/4" shafts.

Buffs come in several sizes. Most used buffs are 9 1/2 " in diameter with a 1-1/2" pile and an outside diameter of seven inches. They are good for sanding fiberglass and cultured marble. Heavy-duty backing ensures durability during high-RPM applications. 8-inch buffs, on the other hand, feature a 100% 4-ply twisted wool pile. For an 8-inch buff, J1441 adapter threads into a 5/8"-11 spindle. The maximum RPM is 3,000.

Hook and Loop Backing Plates

Mandrels and hook and loop backing plates secure polishing and sanding pads to power tools. They are made of rubber, aluminum, or composite resin, and are compatible with orbital and circular polishers. These backing plates have heavy-duty design to firmly grip the pads and last a long time, even with dedicated usage. Here are some common types of mandrels and hook and loop backing plates.

Mandrels and hook and loop backing pads attach to power tools in two basic ways: by fitting on the tool's spindle or shaft, or by fitting directly onto the tool's spindle. The latter type of backing pad attaches to the spindle, locking the disc and pad securely in place. These backing pads are made of rubber or aluminum and come in a wide range of sizes and specialist designs

Longevity of Tools with Backing Pads

A tool can get a longer lifespan when it uses backing pads to polish or sand surfaces. These pads are designed for specific types of tools and can increase the lifespan of your tools. You should choose Makita or DeWALT pads for your tools because they offer higher quality interfaces. If you prefer to use a different brand of backing pads, you may want to consider buying them separately. However, be aware that aftermarket pads may not give you the same quality of interface.
