What is an energy audit?

Interest in energy audits has recently increased as a result of a growing understanding of the human impact on global warming and climate change. Buildings are complex and contain numerous systems that interact, sometimes in not-so-obvious ways unless you are properly trained to understand these dynamics. You’ll want to have the assessment and then improvement performed right the first time by making sure both parts of the process are completed by certified professionals.

According to the definition in the ISO 50002 standard, an energy audit is a systematic analysis of energy use and energy consumption within a defined energy audit scope, in order to identify, quantify and report on the opportunities for improved energy performance.

Energy Audit is a process in which all the energy flow in the system is identified and quantification of energy usage according to its discrete function is done. It aims to balance the input and output of energy. Along with helping in improving the operating and maintenance practices of the system, Energy Audit helps in pollution control, cost optimization, and other safety aspects.

An energy audit helps in shielding an organization from fluctuation in energy cost availability. It also helps in deciding the appropriate energy mix, enables reliability of energy supply, and encourages the usage of better equipment and technology for energy conservation.

Why Energy Audit is important?

Here are some benefits of conducting an energy audit

Energy audits will evaluate your facility “as a whole”, their goal is not to evaluate single measures but to consider a wide range of available alternatives (Electrical, Mechanical, Envelope, and Water).

The audit will not only inform you of opportunities but provide you with financial analysis. This will enable prioritization based on financial benefits and return on investment.

Provide you with solid, easy-to-understand technical information regarding the proposed energy conservation measures.

A good quality audit will analyze your historical energy use and find potential issues using statistical methods.

Provide you with an emissions analysis to help you understand the benefits of your decisions from an environmental standpoint.

Understand where energy is used, and which areas are worth focusing on the most (energy hogs).

Provide you with benchmark information to help you understand your energy use performance compared to others in your field and area.

The cost-benefit analysis of the audit report would help decision-makers prioritize opportunities and evaluate them as investments. These indicators would include, rate of return, net present value, cash flow analysis, and payback.

What are the types of Energy audits?

Basically, there are three types of energy audits:

1.  Preliminary Energy Audit:

It is essentially a data-gathering exercise in the preliminary stage, as well as its analysis. It uses just the available data and limited diagnostic instruments for the audit.

2. Detailed Energy Audit

The detailed audit can be understood as the verification, monitoring, and analysis of the use of energy, and suggest an action plan for reducing the energy consumption through a technical report. Thus, it goes beyond quantitative estimates. The detailed energy audit is performed after the preliminary energy audit. Here, sophisticated instrumentation such as flow meter, and flue gas analyzer. and scanner is used for computing energy efficiency.
