Live in care for those with Muscular dystrophy - could it be a good option?

Medical science has come a long way in the last couple of decades. However, unfortunately, there is still no known cure for Muscular Dystrophy. There are, however, a number of treatment options available that can help to manage the condition. This means that there are more options open for those individuals with a Muscular dystrophy diagnosis.

What is muscular dystrophy?

Muscular dystrophy is the term used to refer to a group of genetic conditions that can cause the muscles to weaken over time. It is believed that there are over 70,000 individuals in the UK who suffer with muscular dystrophy or a related condition. There are 60 rare conditions that can cause the muscles to waste and these are thought to affect approximately 1 in 1000 people. Some of these conditions are ones that people are born with, whilst others can develop over time.

There are a range of different symptoms associated with muscular dystrophy and these can result in different levels of disability. In general, they can have a significant impact on the day to day life of an individual both mentally and physically. This means that ensuring expert care and support is in place are essential to wellbeing.

How can live in care help?

Having a live in carer can offer those with muscular dystrophy can be a great option that will help to put the right levels of trained support in place. A live in care professional would be able to help with those day-to-day tasks that can be a struggle.

This is not short term care but something that can be considered in the longer term. Being in the familiar surroundings of your own home can play an important part of anyone’s mental wellbeing. Therefore, live can really help in allowing an individual with muscular dystrophy to remain in the safety, familiarity and comfort of their own space rather than moving into a care home or specialist care setting.

One to on care

The one-to-one care that can be offered by a live in carer offers the individual the chance to continue to live life in their own way.  They can do so while benefiting from the support of a professional who will be able to assist them with competent tailored care that meets their individual requirements. Perhaps more importantly, it allows them greater freedom over their own life and the chance to remain as independent as possible for as long as possible. This is support that can be put in place whether the person in question is a young adult or an older person.

It is important to remember that the care that a live in carer can offer will vary depending on the age of the individual. It will also depend on the severity of their muscular dystrophy. If the issues that they struggle with become more severe, then the type of care and support that they receive can be adapted whilst hopefully still allowing them to be supported in the home. Live in care can be adapted far more easily to the individual than more traditional care, where increasing severity in a condition may require a complete change of care setting.
