Lord Shiva was once said to have been deeply meditating because of his compassion for humanity. One of his major aims was to bring happiness to everyone. When the Lord awoke from his meditation, his tears fell on Earth. He transformed them into the seeds of the Rudraksha tree. Therefore, Rudraksha are Shiva's tears. According to the Shiva Purana, Rudraksha are Shiva's tears.
Trees with Rudraksha seeds are widely cultivated in Indonesia and Nepal. They can also be found in certain areas of India and Malaysia. The tree is usually 15 to 60 metres high and carries the Rudraksha seed for about 7 years.
