Using VPN? Here is Why You Need To Reconsider Your Cybersecurity

VPN (Virtual Private Network) was introduced to bring privacy to online activities and enhance devices' security while using public Wi-Fi. It also enabled organizations to block access to social networking and streaming sites to ensure enhanced productivity of employees.

However, the cybersecurity landscape is rapidly evolving, and VPNs are on the verge of extinction. Let us dissect why VPNs lost their market share against cybersecurity platforms.

1. Weak encryption

NSA (National Security Agency) of the U.S. Federal Government has already developed a technology to breach VPN's encryption. Using limited prime numbers, they can decrypt the Diffie-Hellman cryptographic key. This allows NSA to decrypt 66% of VPN connections and 25% of SSH servers globally. Therefore, VPNs are no longer safe.

2. Can be blocked by ISP

Several users on the internet have posted that they could connect to a blocked media through Kodi, an open-source home theatre software. It has been observed that VPNs can bypass ISP restrictions. On the other hand, the same limitation can be expanded to cover VPN servers. You can check this by trying to stream a movie or a tv channel through a VPN. If other pages are opening except the streaming or tv channels, then you can consider that your VPN is blocked.

Also, in the US, ISPs can track your online activities and sell your data. Therefore, if you think VPNs are protecting you enough, it is time you rethink.

3. Free VPNs

Many people have tried using free VPNs. However, in the long run, their services have proven futile in several cases. Subscription-based VPNs provide better services, but the widespread popularity of free VPNs and their poor services have ruined VPNs' reputation. Realizing the importance of cybersecurity, organizations and even individuals have started investing in data security platforms

4. Geo-blocking debacle

VPNs failed to execute the geo-blocking system. Albeit, they were used as a medium to fool servers. For example, if a streaming platform allowed the user to access their services only in the U.S., the user would use VPN to fool the server that he is in the U.S. while vacationing in another country.
