What Happens During Your Dog’s Grooming Appointment

Here's the lowdown on your dog’s grooming process so you know what to expect and you can plan the rest of your day while your dog is at the grooming salon.

How long it will take to groom your dog will depend on factors such as his size, type of coat, age, and the kind of grooming he gets regularly.

Groomer Check-in – This approximately takes 5-15 minutes. The groomer chats with you, the pet parents, about your dog’s general health, what you expect or your goals for this grooming session, etc. This is also the time the groomer gets to know your dog.

Prep Work – The groomers take care of the basics first which are brushing out your dog’s coat, cutting the nails, cleaning the ears, and brushing the teeth.

Bathing – Depending on your dog’s coat condition and behavior, bathing may be quick or take longer. Sometimes, aside from the regular shampoo and conditioner, a dog’s coat needs special treatment, which will take longer.

Drying – This is an important process as the dog’s coat needs to dry properly before the groomer can cut it. For smaller dogs, it shouldn’t take more than 20 minutes, but for a bigger, hairy one, it can take from 45 minutes to an hour.

Clipping – This is the time when the groomer trims or does the cutting. The length of time it takes to do this depends on the style you have chosen or what you want for your pooch.

Excessive hair loss or other skin and hair coat issues should be brought to the attention of your veterinarian Metairie, LA.
