A Hawaii Must Visit: Pearl Harbor

For many people, a vacation in Hawaii is a dream. If one is given a chance to see the paradise-like islands of the Aloha State, it is understandable that anyone would want to make the most out of the vacation.

You can start taking full advantage of your ideal Hawaiian vacation by trying the island's delectable dishes or joining Dole pineapple farm tour. From tasty appetizers to filling meals, Hawaii has so much to offer you. Besides the delicious cuisine, Hawaii is also home to significant historical moments.

One of the famous historic places in Hawaii is Pearl Harbor, an active military base and 17-acre national park with so much history. It is one of the biggest tourist sites you can explore besides the tour on Oahu north shore

Pearl Harbor is a U.S. naval base located in Honolulu, Hawaii, that the Japanese forces attacked on December 7, 1941. The Japanese troops destroyed nearly 20 American naval vessels, eight battleships, and 300 planes. Around 2,400 Americans have died, including civilians, and about 1,000 citizens were wounded. Due to this, former President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked Congress to declare war on Japan, marking the entry of the U.S. into the Second World War.

The bombing of Pearl Harbor changed the course of the lives of many Hawaiian citizens at the time. After the bombing, Hawaii was placed under martial law, which remained until the end of World War II. During the martial law in Pearl Harbor, the U.S. military controlled the daily life of everyone in Hawaii. There was also a rampant food shortage during the war. To combat the impacts of food shortage, Spam has become a staple food in Hawaii as it was the only available food that could last in the heat.

There was also a cultural transformation of Hawaii's culture during the war as sugar plantations were turned into training areas for the marines, navy, and the army. The plantations were also converted into housing units, roads, and highways.

Understanding Pearl Harbor's history helps in having an appreciation for the tour of the place, especially if the tour guide is genuinely knowledgeable about the rich history of the location.
