A GIA Diamond Grading Report Shows The Four C’s
Colour: GIA’s colour-grading scale for diamonds is the industry standard. The scale starts with the letter D, representing colourlessness and continues the upliftment of colour to the letter Z or brown or light yellow. You can clearly define the range of colour appearance with each letter grade. Diamonds are usually colour-graded by comparing them to stones of specific known colours under controlled lighting and precise conditions. Rare diamonds are colourless and are more expensive than the usual ones. Diamonds are valued based on how closely they are colourless and transparent- the less colour, the higher their value. Most diamonds are found in jewellery stores that run from near-colourless to colourless with slight hints of brown or yellow.
Clarity: Diamonds are formed deep within the earth, under extreme pressure and heat, as they often contain unique types of birthmarks, either external (blemishes) or internal (inclusions). Diamond refers to the absence of these blemishes and inclusions. Diamonds without these birthmarks are rare, and the rarity mainly affects a diamond’s value. With the use of the GIA International Diamond Grading System, Diamonds are said to be assigned a clarity grade which ranges from Flawlessness (FL) to diamonds with noticeable inclusions (l3).
Every diamond is rare and unique. Nothing is absolutely perfect under 10x magnification, though some come close. These are known as flawless diamonds as they are exceptionally rare. Most of the jewellers out there haven’t even seen one. GIA certified loose diamonds contain the Clarity Scale contains 11 grades, with most diamonds falling into the VS ( very slightly included) or SI (slightly included) categories. The GIA system considers the clarity grade, size, position, nature, colour or relief, and the quantity of clarity characteristics visible under 10x magnification.
Cut: Cut quality is an essential factor that helps in creating a diamond’s fire, brilliance and sparkle. The beauty of a specific diamond depends more on cut quality than anything else. The GIA Diamond Cut Grading System for standard round brilliants in the D-to-Z colour range is based on assessing seven components.
Carat Weight: Gemstones and other Diamonds are weighed in metric carats: one carat equals to 0.2 grams, about the same weight as a paperclip. (Try not confusing carat with karat, as in 18K gold which refers to gold purity).
