Summer has finally arrived, and you know what that means – it’s time to beat the heat! Whether you’re lounging by the pool or hitting the beach, it’s important to protect yourself from harmful UV rays, which can do more than just darken your skin – they can cause skin cancer too! These 5 tips will help you beat the heat this summer in style.
1) Wear light clothing
-Invest in lightweight and breathable clothing. Fabrics like cotton, linen, and silk all offer high levels of ventilation.
-Look for fabrics that wick away moisture and keep you cool, such as cotton. Wool is also a great fabric for hot weather. A thinner wool sweater might be what you need to feel like you're keeping your cool.
-Stay out of the sun when it's at its strongest
-Wear sunscreen (and SPF clothing)
-Monitor your food intake In the summer months, we typically consume more sugar-laden drinks and heavy meals. These types of foods not only lead to weight gain but can also cause dehydration because they don't replenish fluids lost through sweat. Drink plenty of water! If you are exercising during this time of year, try drinking an electrolyte-enhanced sports drink after working out or sip on some coconut water which contains electrolytes naturally.
-Go easy on yourself: Take frequent breaks from the heat by going indoors if possible or taking a walk in the shade with friends or family members. Pace yourself and take regular breaks so that your body doesn't get overwhelmed by the heat which can result in cramps or exhaustion.
2) Stay in air-conditioned areas
It can be really hard to beat the heat this summer, but there are a few ways you can lower your chances of getting heatstroke. For one, it's important that you drink plenty of water and don't forget to wear sunscreen before you go outside. It's also important that you stay in air-conditioned areas like libraries, theaters, malls, or shopping centers if possible. Another way is to use something that generates cold air like an evaporative cooler or even an electric fan which will cool things down considerably. If these suggestions still aren't enough for you then find another way around doing anything outdoors by watching movies from home and reading eBooks. There are tons of great stories available online at all times so you'll never run out of reading material. Don't forget to dress appropriately when heading out during the day; layers work well because they help regulate your body temperature. Remember to hydrate with non-alcoholic drinks too since alcohol can actually make you feel hotter instead of cooling you off!
4) Drink water or coconut water
For hydration, you can drink water or coconut water, both of which will help make it easier for your body to cool down. Drink water before and after exercising, but don't drink too much. If your clothes are getting wet from sweat and you are beginning to feel lightheaded, stop exercising and replace fluids by drinking a sports drink or coconut water. Remember: children and elderly people need even more fluids than adults because they sweat less.
Spend some time outdoors in shade rather than staying indoors where the air is stifling. Wear light-colored clothing: The darker colors absorb heat so choose lighter colors that reflect the sun's rays. Wear loose-fitting clothing made of cotton (not polyester) so you'll stay cooler while being protected from UV rays and other hazards such as sand and poison ivy. Use an umbrella to block sunlight when possible; wear a hat; use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher; avoid driving during peak hours if possible; walk or bike instead of taking public transportation when possible.
3) Don’t skip meals
It is important not to skip meals this summer. Hunger can make you feel uncomfortable, and it also makes it difficult for your body to cool down. If you feel like you need an extra boost, try sipping on a refreshing glass of ice water or eat fresh fruits and vegetables. Drinking lots of fluids is essential during the hot months because your body needs more water in order to regulate its temperature. Drink up! The simplest way to beat the heat is to drink enough liquids throughout the day. The body’s cooling system works best when there are plenty of fluids available. Even if you don’t feel thirsty, drinking water will help keep your body hydrated which in turn helps cool you off as well as reduce fatigue. If plain water doesn’t sound appealing, add some flavor with lemon or lime slices and crushed mint leaves for a spritzer-like drink that will rejuvenate you from head to toe!
5) Eat ice pops
Ice pops are a great way to beat the heat this summer. Though there are countless varieties, it’s always better to avoid anything that contains corn syrup or high fructose corn syrup. It may seem like it doesn’t make a difference, but your body will thank you in the long run. Other than ice pops, plenty of other snacks or drinks can be made at home such as rice krispie treats and lemonade. The last step would be ensuring you’re taking good care of yourself by drinking plenty of water throughout the day and making sure you have adequate shelter when outside. Remember, these five tips should help keep you cool all summer long!
