HOW LGBTQIA+ COMMUNITY SUFFER FROM POOR MENTAL HEALTH?

LGBTQIAA+ community people face the most depression phase because of this judgmental society which can make their life very hard. They hide from the outside world and get depressed. People are afraid to show their real image. But now the generation is educated and they are making themselves so strong that they don't care about people who will talk about them. One-third of trans patients have had at least one negative healthcare experience in the past year related to being transgender. Even more troubling, 23 percent of trans patients report avoiding needed medical attention altogether for fear of being mistreated

Whether in an emergency room, a therapy session, or sitting through a routine checkup, trans people are often subject to blatant transphobia in health and mental healthcare settings. More insidious, however, are the myriad ways trans people experience microaggressions. Though trans microaggressions — defined as indirect, subtle, or unintentional instances of discrimination against members of a marginalized group (in this case, transgender people) — are not typically motivated by malice, they can still have a significant negative impact on a patient’s experience, contribute to lower standards of care, and can serve as a deterrent the next time a trans patient needs care.

LGBTQI+ health refers to the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex (LGBTQI+) people. LGBTQI+ people represent a subset of individuals among the broader category of sexual and gender-diverse individuals. Sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression (SOGIE) are diverse and span cultures across the world.

WHO's support to the Member States is founded on the fundamental human rights principle that all persons should have access to health services without discrimination, including on the basis of SOGIE. The adoption of the 2030 agenda for sustainable development and its pledge to “leave no one behind”, based on the normative framework of international human rights law has reinforced the need to understand and improve the health and well-being of LGBTQI+ people, who are often left behind. WHO develops guidelines, and technical support and conducts research to strengthen LGBTQI+ inclusive health services and policies.

Individuals experience common and unique barriers to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health based on SOGIE. They are less likely to access health services and engage with healthcare workers due to stigma and discrimination and bear a disproportionate burden of adverse physical and mental health outcomes. As a community, they are more likely to experience human rights violations including violence, torture, criminalization, involuntary medical procedures, and discrimination. In addition, they face denial of care, discriminatory attitudes, and inappropriate pathologizing in healthcare settings.
