What You Need to Know About Stainless Steel 304 Pipes

Since its invention over a century ago, stainless steel (SS) has become the most popular and widely used material on the planet. 304 is the most commonly used stainless steel grade among the various grades. It is also known as "A2 stainless steel." This blog contains all of the information you might need before using this grade of steel for your work.

Stainless Steel 304 Pipes Stainless Steel 304 (UNS S30400) pipe is an austenitic chromium-nickel alloy. Its primary crystalline structure is austenite, which prevents heat hardening and renders the steels essentially nonmagnetic.

Characteristics of SS 304 Pipes

This grade of pipes possess the following qualities:

Corrosion Resistance: 304 stainless steel pipes are corrosion resistant in a variety of atmospheric conditions as well as corrosive media. It is prone to pitting and crevice corrosion in heated chloride environments, as well as stress corrosion cracking above (approximately) 60 °C.

Cryogenic Resistance: When exposed to cryogenic temperatures, austenitic stainless steels such as 304 become "tough" and are classified as "cryogenic steels." They are suitable for sub-zero ambient temperatures as well as sub-arctic and arctic applications and locations, with typical temperatures of -40°C.

Heat Resistance: Grade 304 pipes have good oxidation resistance in intermittent service up to 870 °C and in continuous service up to 925 °C.

Types of Pipes

Pipe Types Based on Shape - The stainless steel 304 pipes are available in a variety of shapes, including:

Round, Square, Rectangle

Manufacturing - Stainless steel 304 pipes can be distinguished based on how they are manufactured.

Welded pipe is a steel pipe that is formed by crimping and welding a steel plate or strip steel.

Seamless pipe is created by extruding, drawing, and heating a billet over a shape until it becomes a hollow tube.
