Revenge Best Served Hot?
Let’s backtrack a little. There is a story behind how this dish came into existence and its starts with revenge.
Thornton Prince, from the Prince’s Hot Chicken, was known to be a womanizer. He loved women as much as he loved fried chicken. His infidelity caused a stir, and his girlfriend swore to take revenge. She attempted to burn the prince’s mouth by adding too much to the chicken.
However, there’s a twist. Instead of hating it, Prince loved the dish. He even loaded himself with a second helping as well. Their relationship didn’t work out, but Mr. Prince had a discovery.
Mr. Prince worked hard to perfect the make-you-sweat hot chicken recipe. Later, he and his brothers sold the chicken at a BBQ chicken shack. They took their business close to the Grand Ole Opry in Hell’s Half Acre. The chicken added flavor to the tongues of many performers. In 1980, the efforts of Andre Prince Jeffries, his great-niece reached the mayor.
Hot Chicken Becomes Popular
The Prince family has been serving the Nashville hot chicken since the 1930s. However, it wasn’t always the city’s favorite. Rather it was looked down upon as “black food”.
It gained its reputation only after Mayor Bill Purcell came to Prince’s and encouraged his friends to taste the food. And, suddenly the story wasn’t the same.
On 4 July 2007, Nashville held its first hot chicken festival. Pepperfire joined the battle in 2010 and Hattie B’s in 2012. And this is how hot chicken became Nashville’s true pride.
