What's the Best Way to Clean a Carpet? Do-It-Yourself or Hire a Pro?

In the era of Pinterest, it's easy to find yourself searching for a do-it-yourself answer to every issue you face. What methods work best for removing wine stains from fabric? When going on a trip, what is the most efficient way to pack? Can you describe your process for maintaining your own carpets? We'll be the first to admit that we've turned to the social media platform Pinterest in search of solutions to life's minor annoyances. However, there are some situations in which people get themselves into financial hot water by trying to handle things on their own instead of consulting experts. Not always the case, but we have seen our share of do-it-yourself dry cleaning disasters.

The folks over at Smart Vacuums have some insightful commentary on the topic, and they were kind enough to share it with us along with a helpful infographic:

Carpets. They're extremely comfortable to wear, look great, and are available in a wide variety of colours and designs. Wonderful as they are, it's nearly impossible to keep these carpets spotless. Whether it's a guest who gets too excited at the dinner table or a group of children and dogs who don't know how to wipe their muddy feet, it can happen to anyone. The question then becomes whether to hire a professional carpet cleaner or attempt cleaning it yourself, given that your carpet is now dirty and/or stained.

Both options have pros and cons that may make picking one more difficult than expected. Expert carpet cleaners can remove tough stains and odours with ease because of their extensive training, attention to detail, risk mitigation strategies, and high-quality tools. Alternatively, DIY carpet cleaning can save you money, but it's more time-consuming and comes with the risk of damaging your floor.

We tend to agree with you! While it is possible to clean your own carpets, you may be putting a significant portion of your home at risk if you do so. Of course, we're a little partial because we ourselves provide in-home carpet cleaning services, but we've chosen to offer this service and work with Yorkville Carpet Care because we know how important it is to provide our customers with high-quality carpet cleaning. We didn't just want to leave you with your wall-to-wall carpet and a few rugs, so we included other textiles as well.

Have a look at this infographic we made at Smart Vacuums to see how professionally cleaned vs. cleaned by yourself carpets stack up:
