Did you understand, the word, “Europe” is derived from the name of a Phoenician queen – Europa

Quick Facts Travel Europe

Continent Size:

The second-smallest continent in the globe is Europe.

No of countries:

Of the 44 officially recognized nations in Europe, 27 are members of the European Union, which unites the region's politics and economy. EU passports are required for entry, and the euro is the accepted form of payment.

Largest & smallest:

Europe is home to both the largest and smallest countries in the world, Russia and Vatican City (by area).

Population – 8.5 million (2019)

Tourist Visa:

Schengen and distinct nations.

An agreement among European nations to permit the free movement of persons is known as the Schengen Area or Zone (between the participating countries). The Schengen Zone does not include all EU countries and vice versa.

As associate members of the Schengen Area but not EU members, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein are accessible to travelers with a Schengen visa, but they do not use the Euro as their official currency.

Although they may accept euros, be prepared to exchange money or accept the change in their home currency. In comparison to other EU nations like France, Spain, or Germany, the three of the four countries listed here that we visited are very pricey.

European Regions

Northern Europe comprises Nordic nations, such as the Faroe Islands, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. (The phrases Scandinavia and Nordic are used to refer to certain of the northern European nations)

Southern European - Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, and all the Mediterranean nations are examples of countries. (The word "Balkans" is frequently used to refer to the nations in the southeast of Europe.)

Central & Eastern Europe – Many times, the terms "Central Europe" and "Eastern Europe" are used synonymously, and they encompass nations like the Czech Republic, Poland, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, and Croatia (also referred to as Eastern European countries).

Western Europe – Politics of World War II are frequently connected with Western Europe (and a term coined as a result of that). It comprises nations like Austria (sometimes known as "Central Europe"), Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, and Germany. In any case, Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, the UK, Ireland, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Vatican City, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Greece, and Austria are all considered to be parts of "Western Europe" both geographically and politically.

Cabo da Raco in Portugal (Sintra Cascais Natural Park) is the westernmost point of the European continent.

Getting ready for Europe – Travel Visa

As was previously said, the European Union is made up of around 27 countries, and they use the Schengen agreement to permit travelers to enter different countries. Being a member of the Schengen group of nations implies that you will need a Schengen visa if you need one.

You can travel to these 27 nations with a single "visa" if you have a Schengen visa. It requires an application before your visit. Visas with one entry or multiple entries are available.

No visa is necessary for residents of the United States and Canada. Holders of US and Canadian passports are not required to obtain a visa in order to visit and remain in the Schengen region for up to 90 days for tourism.

Several nations are not EU members but yet adhere to the Schengen visa rules (like Switzerland and Iceland). You should research the visa requirements for countries with their own systems before traveling, such as Russia and Serbia.

Flight Tips for Europe

There are many tourist attractions here, thus there are always flights going to Europe. You may save money and time by following these easy travel recommendations!

Main flight:

Search for flights to popular destinations such as London, Paris, Amsterdam, Zurich, Madrid, etc. They frequently offer a wide range of flight alternatives from different places throughout the globe. Direct flights may also be available, depending on the city of departure.

Star Alliance:

To book connections and save money when flying from North America, look up the Star Alliance list of partners.

According to our prior experience, we've had the best experiences with KLM Dutch Airlines, Air France, Air Canada, and Swiss Air for lengthy journeys.

For stopovers, IcelandAir and TAP Air Portugal are also excellent choices.

Stopovers provide you the chance to tour the hub nation or airport region before connecting to another European nation. For instance, IcelandAir may make a stopover in Reykjavik (stay there for about 48 hours), then fly to London, or it may fly to Lisbon, then connect with TAP Air Portugal to fly to Rome, Italy.

Budget Airlines:

Many low-cost airlines, like RyanAir, Vueling, and many others, are based in Europe and offer flights starting at $30 USD. When there is no train network or the train is very expensive, we advise choosing cheap airfares (like 3 times the flight cost). In addition to saving time (check-in, security, etc.) this way, you also get to enjoy the breathtaking scenery outdoors.

Additionally, taking the train will lower your carbon impact and lower your luggage costs. Yes, take notice that there will be a bag fee on low-cost flights.

Best time to travel to Europe

The four distinct seasons in Europe are spring, summer, autumn/fall, and winter. Additionally, each nation has separate official seasons. Of course, the temperature varies as well; not all places experience the same kind of winter.

The seasons are typical as follows:

  • March to June is Spring.
  • June through September is considered Summer.
  • September through November is considered Autumn/fall
  • December to March is Winter.

As you travel from the southern to the northern end of the continent, the temperature varies. However, Europe offers it all: cities, beaches, ski resorts, warm winter destinations, and everything in between.

Months of Summer:

The most popular time of year to travel to Europe is during the summer. The tourist season is typically at its busiest around this time, thus attractions, hotels, and restaurants are frequently full.

The days are longer and warmer at this time of year. When traveling to Europe in the summer, we advise booking hotels, tours, and any events that may be on your bucket list for Europe as early as possible.

Winter Months:

The range of temperatures is between 1 and 5 degrees Celsius (33.8 F to 41 F).

The coldest months in Europe are January and February, and January is also the cheapest month to travel there.

Europe is wonderful to travel to in December for its lovely Christmas markets, shopping, and New Year's festivities. The start of the ski season occurs in January, which is a popular travel month for people who want to hit the slopes.
