A form of internal radiotherapy is Brachytherapy. Your body is implanted with a tiny radioactive substance known as a source, either inside the malignancy or close by. or into the region where the malignancy was before the operation. Types of brachytherapy-
· High dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy
· Low dose rate (LDR) brachytherapy
Low Dosage Rate (LDR) Brachytherapy, which uses, among other sources, 137Caesium and Iridium. In this method, once the patient is in a protected space, a "applicator" is positioned in the cavity or inside the tumour and the source is fed into the applicator. They stay apart till the source is eliminated (usually 12-24 hours). Frequently, this procedure necessitates hospitalisation.
High Dose Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy, which can be administered using miniature sources of 60Cobalt or 192Iridium, provides for a dosage rate greater than 12 Grays per hour, accounting for brief treatment durations. HDR may be used as an outpatient treatment for this reason. For gynaecological cancers, brachytherapy is a crucial part of radiation therapy. Prostate, breast, soft tissue sarcomas, a few head and neck tumours, and skin cancers are among more conditions that can benefit from brachytherapy.
