CERTIFICATE PROGRAM IN POSTCOLONIAL HINDU STUDIES | HINDU UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA

Hindu University of America offers many courses such as: Vedic Courses, Sanskrit Courses, Vedic Study Courses, Hindu Vedas.

We usually associate colonialism with political domination and economic exploitation. Colonialism, however, involved the representation, study, classification, and organization of the colonized through "intellectual" works including translations, commentaries, travelogues, surveys, etc., which were disseminated through the establishment of academic institutions. This intervention systematically destroyed the natural worldview of the original ways of positioning and localization in the world.

In short, colonialism involved the conquest of culture through what is now recognized in academia as "epistemic violence." India, Hindus and Hinduism have been victims of epistemic violence where heaps have been written that have separated them from their epistemological and cosmological foundations. The effects have been twofold: 1) In contemporary mainstream academia, the same warped and demonized discourse continues in a politically correct manner. 2) Post-colonial India has not systematically analyzed the sinister and distorted discourse that has been unleashed about its culture and traditions in general and Hinduism in particular. The certificate programs in "Postcolonial Hindu Studies" will systematically examine colonialism as a discourse, i.e. the literary, representational and ideological components of its political and material dominance. It will carefully examine how Hindus reading colonial texts assimilated and internalized Western theories and hypotheses about themselves and adopted Western ways of seeing themselves as the "truth" of their own culture and civilization. It will seek to penetrate the mystical amnesia of the colonial aftermath and understand the ways in which the living Hindu culture and civilization has been condemned and marginalized as a result of colonial rule in contemporary discourse. It will explore ways of decolonization, ie the process of questioning European categories and epistemologies and seeking liberation from colonial forms of knowledge and thought. Finally, it will explore and facilitate ways of retrieving, restoring and rejuvenating pre-colonial Hindu culture and knowledge.
