What makes the price of a rug?

You will find on Qaleen.com carpets of all styles for all decoration desires! Modern carpets, design and trends in various materials and colors. But also, in price ranges accessible to all budgets. So how do you determine the price of a rug? We will explain everything to you!

1- Its composition: natural or synthetic material?

Modern rugs can be made from natural materials, such as wool, cotton or even leather. Or in synthetic materials, such as acrylic or polyester. A rug made from 100% natural material will be more expensive than a synthetic fiber rug. And beware, not all yarns are created equal. We all know that anything that is handmade and needs human expertise, skill, and time will cost more than mass-produced, machine-made things. The same applies to rugs as well. The handmade afghan-rugs for sale, which are made by hand by weaving each knot individually in a specially designed loom are, therefore, the most expensive.

In ascending order of quality, we find wool and then pure virgin wool (from the shearing of sheep without treatment). In the same way, the origin of the wool influences the final cost of the carpet. Thus, the wools of Ireland and Scotland are very famous for their resistance.

It is important to differentiate between these 3 great wools of superior quality:

New Zealand wool is a wool of constant quality, of exceptional whiteness and particularly robust. This wool comes from sheep.

Bikaner wool is an Indian wool from the highlands in the north of the country. It takes its name from the small town in which it is woven. Bikaner wool is a high quality wool regularly used in the manufacture of woven or hand-knotted carpets.

Merino wool is a particularly delicate and soft wool. This wool is lighter and finer than a human hair. It is taken from sheep of the Merino breed.

2- Its density: the gram mage of the carpet is very important in determining its price.

Carpet density is measured in grams per m². The higher the density, the thicker and therefore softer, warmer and more durable the rug will be. The higher the density, the tighter the bristles. This density gives your rug great resistance over time.

To give you an idea, the average weight of a rug is 3500 grams/m² but depending on the materials and the method of manufacture it can vary from less than 1kg/m² to more than 6kgs/m² for high end rugs. If ever the gram mage is not specified, remember that the heavier a carpet is, the more it is of quality (and therefore the higher its price will be).

3- Its manufacture: by hand or by machine?

A handmade rugs for sale made by hand craftsmen is more of an exceptional piece of decoration than a standard decorative accessory produced industrially. The manufacturing method therefore weighs very heavily on the value of the rug. In addition, its origin also deserves to be studied: certain provenances are particularly prized, especially when we know that the region is renowned for its manufacturing methods. There are several manufacturing techniques. Hand-knotted, hand-woven, machine-woven, hand-tufted and machine-tufted.

This technique consists of creating slip knots between “weft” strands, generally made of wool or viscose, and “warp” strands (most often a canvas that serves as a support). It gives the handmade rug a very sophisticated appearance, both in terms of its finesse and its resistance over time.

A hand-tufted rug is a rug made on the basis of a textile support, on which the desired pattern has been drawn beforehand. Unlike hand-knotted, hand-tufted is done on a horizontal support.

4- Its complexity: you have to know how to put the price for a long and meticulous work.

Not all handmade rugs are classic and plain. They may request additional work. This additional work will also help determine the price of a rug. At Tapis Chic, we offer products like this Dotted hand tufted rug from the Line Pure range. This rug features a harmonious blend of colors and embossed patterns. These designs represent “pebbles” worked directly into the wool with viscose. Buy Online!
