Zeron 100 Overview


A highly alloyed stainless steel created for usage in hostile conditions is called Zeron 100, or super duplex stainless steel. Several of the qualities that make this duplex stainless steel appealing to a variety of industries include its high strength, hardness, superior corrosion resistance, and its resistance to corrosion in a wide range of organic and inorganic acids. Furthermore, it has excellent resistance to corrosion in several non-oxidizing acids and strong alkalis.


It is not advised to use this super duplex stainless steel for applications that require prolonged exposure to temperatures above 572 °F. Toughness is significantly decreased as a result of this exposure. While duplex 2507 and zeron 100 have comparable chemical compositions, Zeron 100 has a minor advantage in terms of copper and tungsten content. Excellent resistance to corrosion in several non-oxidizing and mineral acids, such as hydrochloric and sulfuric acids, is made possible by the copper content (minimum 0.5, maximum 1.0).


Zeron 100 Strength Allows for Thinner Walls


Zeron 100 has a nickel content of 8% by weight in cast iron and 7% in wrought iron, but its strength and temperature resistance enable thinner walls than would be required when using the majority of other stainless steel alloys, which more than makes up for the greater cost.


According to Offshore Magazine, engineers installing a membrane filtering system at the Syd Arne reservoir, an offshore oil field off the coast of Denmark, chose Zeron 100 for its piping because of the super duplex alloy's durability.


The capabilities of the engineers to use thinner pipes, smaller diameters, and smaller valve sizes made it possible for them to control the system's weight. Zeron 100 was the best pick for the system because it needed to withstand high pressure pumps and a continuous flow of seawater.


Nitrogen Contributes Added Benefits


The British Stainless Steel Association claims that the capacity to regulate the amount of nitrogen in alloys is a relatively recent advancement in metallurgy. This newly discovered method played a significant role in the creation of novel alloys and paved the way for the development of duplex and superduplex stainless steels.


The nitrogen added to Zeron 100 provides a number of advantages. The Water Research Foundation notes that other stainless steels frequently lose their corrosion resistance after welding, which is why nitrogen helps avoid pitting and corrosion, boosts strength, and makes the metal more weldable.


Given that other common alloys like 316L and 904L have PRENs of 24 and 35, respectively, many engineers would probably be pleased to learn that Zeron 100 has a PREN of greater than 40. Although Hastelloy C-276 has a PREN of 67, Zeron 100's ability to resist pitting mixed with its affordability may lead fabricators to believe that Zeron 100 offers the best of both worlds.
