NIPUN Bharat Mission - Ensuring Foundational Literacy and Numeracy

National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Understanding and Numeracy or NIPUN Bharat Mission is launched by the Education Ministry of India under National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020).

NIPUN Bharat Mission scheme ensures that every student in India gains foundational numeracy and literacy by the end of Grade 3.

NIPUN Bharat Mission – An Overview

NIPUN Bharat Mission aims to transform the monotonous learning system into an enjoyable, integrated, all-inclusive and engaging one. It instructs teachers to prepare an education plan or strategy to develop the students' literary and basic language skills.

Moreover, as a part of Samagra Shiksha, this mission will work to retain students till their foundational knowledge is complete, improve learning, boost educator capacity and track every child's progress. The aim is to achieve the discussed goals by 2026-27.

As mentioned in National Education Policy, there are different areas of development socio-emotional, literacy and numeracy, physical and motor, cognitive development, moral development, art and aesthetic, which are interdependent and interrelated.

Objectives of NIPUN Bharat Mission

Following are the objectives of the National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Understanding and Numeracy Bharat Mission:

• To ensure an inclusive classroom environment by incorporating play, discovery, and activity-based pedagogies, linking them to the daily life situations of the kid and formal inclusion of home languages.
• To enable kids to become independent, motivated and engaged writers and readers with comprehension possessing sustainable writing and reading skills.
• To make sure availability and effective usage of high-quality and culturally responsive teaching education material in the mother language.
• To ensure assessment as of and for learning through portfolios, role plays, group and collaborative work, project work, oral presentations, games, short tests, etc.
• To actively engage with all stakeholders, i.e., Parents, Teachers, Students and Community policymakers, to build an excellent foundation of lifelong learning.
• To make kids know the reasoning in the domains of numbers, shapes and measurement; and enable them to become independent in problem-solving through spatial understanding skills.
• To focus on continuous capacity building of head teachers, teachers, education administrators and academic resource persons.
• To ensure tracking of education levels of every kid.

The aims of this mission are similar to Lakshya Soochi or Targets for Foundational Literacy and Numeracy. This scheme has shifted Lakshyas from Balvatika to 3rd class to generate awareness on this target among volunteers, parents, the community, etc.
