Dental Assistants: Do You Feel Appreciated At Work?

Whether or not you feel valued at work depends on this old adage. Usually, this means you've been promoted to a dream job by a big shot, someone of influence or prestige who had the power to get you where you wanted to go. Often this person is a good friend, longtime colleague, or lover. But being a dental assistant is something completely different.

As a dental assistant, someone you know can really make or break your luck at work. And the “who” are the dentists and dental hygienists you work with. Get more here Md Tangeer Mehedi.

The bad news first: Dental assistants may be some of the unhappiest people on the planet.

Feeling valued—or not—depends on a few key pain points for dental assistants:

  • Terrible bosses
  • Low pay/irregular hours
  • Extracurricular work chores, such as scrubbing toilets
  • The first in this list is the most important. And that's what you have the most control over.
  • In fact, if you get to number one right — finding a boss who treats you with courtesy and respect — #2 and #3 on the list will likely be less of a problem. In other words, get #1 right, and the rest is happily ever after.

How terrible can become terrible?

Here are some representative complaints (from current and former DAs writing on the Indeed.com jobs site):

  • "Most abusive job I've ever had — and I've worked fast food and large retail jobs."
  • "Condescending bosses who talk to you like you're an idiot just because you can't read their minds."
  • "They let me wash windows and scrub toilets because they wanted to reduce the cost of cleaning services."
  • "25 years and all I have to show for is back and neck problems."
  • "Nothing is ever good enough."
