If you wish to utilize a canvas meant for oils or acrylics for watercolors, you'll need to prepare it beforehand. The canvas has to be coated with an absorbent agent like Golden Absorbent Ground so that the watercolors don't run off the surface.
- Always start by priming the canvas with gesso. Before applying Golden Absorbent Ground, gessoing the canvas is essential. If you want your gesso to look good, give it two applications.
- Apply a thin coat of Golden Absorbent Ground with a brush or roller after the gesso has dried. Thinner layers are preferable to thicker ones since the latter are more likely to break.
- When additional coats are applied, the canvas can soak up more paint. Applying 5 or 6 applications of Golden Absorbent Ground and letting each coat dry completely in between will give you the high absorbency required to receive watercolors.
- Wait at least 24 hours for the ground to dry before painting over it with watercolors. Cool!
If you prime the canvas with Golden Absorbent Ground, it will take on the texture of paper, making a watercolor painting much simpler. Avoid getting water on the canvas after applying the watercolors since they will still be vulnerable to smudging.
If you're satisfied with the painting's final appearance, spray varnish may be used to make it watertight. To ensure complete water tightness, you may need to apply several coats. The artwork may then be displayed either unframed or in a glass case.
