International Women's Day's History
On February 28, 1909, members of the Socialist Party of America led a march through New York City to remember the textile workers' strike of the previous year, planting the roots for what would later become International Women's Day. The original purpose of this so-called "National Women's Day" was to rally support for the causes of equal wages, safer working conditions, and women's suffrage.
In Denmark the following year, the International Congress of Working Women established an international day for women to advocate for equal pay, the right to vote, and leadership roles in society. As a result, the first-ever International Women's Day was celebrated in 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland.
Despite the lack of a firm deadline, momentum was building. Women in Petrograd, the Russian city, marched and went on strike on the first day of the revolution, March 8, 1917, before the Gregorian clock was widely accepted. Female suffrage was instituted by the interim administration that took power after the emperor was deposed a few days later.
The celebration of International Women's Day rapidly expanded to communist nations. Consider China, where it arrived in 1922 and became a national holiday for women upon the rise to power of the Communist Party in 1949; today, Chinese women still get half a day off of work to celebrate the holiday.
Second-wave feminism, which focused on issues such as reproductive rights, divorce legislation, and domestic abuse, popularised International Women's Day across the Western hemisphere in the 1960s.
The United Nations first celebrated International Women's Day in 1975, during the first International Women's Year, setting the stage for the worldwide holiday we enjoy today.
International Women's Day Nowadays
International Women's Day 2022 will focus on the message of ending bias. It's a time to reflect on how far we still need to go in ending prejudice against women and to rejoice in the obvious victories already won.
The United Kingdom is no different in this regard. To be more specific, domestic and public acts of aggression against women persist. Nearly one-third of women between the ages of 16 and 59 will experience domestic abuse in their lifespan, according to data provided by Refuge, a UK organization assisting women and children who have encountered different forms of violence. Even more tragically, every week in England and Wales, two women are murdered by a current or past companion.
In addition to honoring the amazing women in our lives, March 8 is a chance to initiate change on a global scale. There is the government, the job, the classroom, and the family. What else can be done to combat the normalization of violence against women and girls and ensure that women and girls everywhere enjoy the same level of protection as men?
There is a wide range of variations in the ways in which different nations and people celebrate International Women's Day. Nevertheless, we can all do our part by simply supporting businesses, social ventures, and organizations that aim to improve the lives of women, regardless of any marches, hashtags, festivals, or other mercantile events.
