History

The University of Dundee began as a University College in 1881, thanks to a generous donation from cousins Mary Ann Baxter and John Boyd Baxter. The Baxter family came from Dundee, Scotland, and made their fortune in jute mills, which were important during Scotland's industrial revolution.

The goal of establishing this educational institute was to "promote the education of both sexes and the study of Science, Literature, and the Fine Arts." Furthermore, the institute lacked a religious oath and had no plans to offer Divinity courses.

In 1897, the college university became a constituent college of the University of St. Andrews, and in 1967, it was granted independent status by Royal Charter, with the Queen Mother serving as its first chancellor.

Today, the University of Dundee has evolved into one of the UK's leading educational institutions, offering over 200 undergraduate degree combinations in a variety of subjects. The UK University created academic and research opportunities for both UK and non-UK students, providing them with the knowledge, experience, and technical skills required to stimulate local and global change.

The University is divided into ten academic colleges, each with its own research center and group. These are some examples:

  • Jordan Stone College of Art and Design (which is one of the leading art schools in the UK)
  • Business School Dentistry School
  • Education and Social Work Schools
  • Health Sciences College
  • Humanities School
  • Life Sciences School
  • College of Medicine
  • Science and Engineering School
  • Social Sciences Department

Since gaining independence, this UK university has aggressively pursued growth and development. Aside from classes, the campus has four libraries spread across three campuses, with over 750 computers and other resources available to students throughout the year.

Achievements and Rankings

The Times University Guide 2023 ranks it 32nd; the Guardian University Guide 2023 ranks it 44th; and the QS World University Rankings 2023 ranks it 354th.

The University's Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, School of Medicine, and School of Dentistry are all highly regarded on a global scale and consistently rank high in UK league tables. Anatomy and physiology, dentistry, and social work, all from the University of Dundee, are among the top ten subjects in the United Kingdom. According to the Guardian University Guide 2020, the university is ranked first in Scotland and fourth overall for law.

The University has successfully expanded its campus by adding cutting-edge facilities, pushing research boundaries, and maintaining a collaborative ethos.
